TISER CUP: building peace through football

A community football tournament that turned rivals into teammates — and brought farmers, pastoralists and young people together around peace.

In January 2018, on a dusty field in Wami Dakawa, Mvomero, something remarkable happened: farmers, pastoralists and young people who had once eyed each other with suspicion lined up on the same pitch — to play football for peace.

The TISER CUP was conceived as more than a tournament. Under banners reading 'Kudumisha Amani' (Sustaining Peace), it used the unifying power of sport to bring rival communities together, channelling youthful energy into friendly competition rather than conflict.

The final drew crowds from across the district and was graced by the Mvomero District Commissioner, Hon. Mohamed Musa Utaly, who used the occasion to stress how vital it is for communities to protect the peace among themselves.

Alongside the matches, TISER ran peace education in local schools — teaching pupils the value of staying in school, protecting peace and avoiding early pregnancy — and trained village mediation committees to resolve land disputes before they escalate.

Sport opened the door; dialogue kept it open. The TISER CUP remains one of our most joyful reminders that peace is something communities can build together — and even celebrate.
